Candidly written, the book depicts the struggles shouldered by both the caretaker and her patient. Likewise, it opens readers’ eyes and hearts to understand and sympathize with them. It also inspires readers to look closely and see the situation in a new light, and to feel and let each emotion pass. Furthermore, the author motivates readers to persistently love and never neglect one’s responsibility to his family.

Can love be measured? For Dr. Rosalie H. Contino, love and care for a sibling is boundless as exemplified in her book, Bob: As Life Goes On. It echoed her unrestricted love for her brother, Bob, especially in times when he needed her most.

As Life Goes On tells the story of a woman who reflects on the lessons she learned while remembering the life of her brother. Decidedly, she ventured into caregiving when his retired brother, diagnosed with mild schizophrenia, eventually suffered from various physical maladies. Her frustration progresses starting with Bob’s experience with his reluctant boss, followed by emergence of more illnesses, to the point when his body became unresponsive to treatments, and until he died.

In her book, Dr. Contino conveyed her vexations in life as she repeatedly witnessed her brother’s incessant failing health despite medical help, countless treatment, and numerous tests. Still, she did not give up; she continued to pray and hoped for his brother’s recovery. She even abandoned her dreams to focus on her brother’s needs. In relation to Contino’s unconditional love for Bob, Kirkus Reviews stated, “As Bob’s sister and caregiver, Contino saw a side of the disease few people understand.”

As Life Goes On will be featured at the 2015 American Association of School Libraries, which will be held on November 5-7, 2015 at Columbus, Ohio. Several materials will also be exhibited during the whole event.
