Oklahoma Author of Good Books for Teens Tells Why She’s an Indie Author

Norma Jean’s tipping point came after spending two full years in an attempt to find a publisher (or an agent) for a teen novel she’d completed. “I didn’t even get a nibble – it was rejection after rejection. Such a discouraging experience.”

“Authors are on a quest to take back control of their artistic endeavors, and they’re doing it by becoming indie authors.”

Oklahoma author of teen novels, Norma Jean Lutz, has been active in the writing and publishing world for well over thirty years. Her list of published books – all under her own name – number more than fifty. All but eight of the titles are good books for teens. (The other eight are adult fiction.)

Why would such a prolific author turn to self-publishing?

Her decision is certainly not an isolated one; not in this day and age of digital publishing and digital readers. It’s been stated that indie-authored books are now estimated to compose up to 20% of the entire book market. That percentage grows each day.

These days, many big-name authors are cutting all ties with their so-called legitimate publishing houses and are going it alone. Some would say it’s mainly because of money – taking in 70% of the royalties rather than the 8% to 10% from the publishing houses -- but that’s only part of the picture. Says Norma Jean, “Authors are on a quest to take back control of their artistic endeavors, and they’re doing it by becoming indie authors.”

This author of clean teen reads has joined that number. Her tipping point came after spending two full years in an attempt to find a publisher (or an agent) for a teen novel she’d completed. “I didn’t even get a nibble – it was rejection after rejection. Such a discouraging experience.” The fact that Norma Jean was a veteran published author with a following didn’t seem to matter to the traditional publishing houses.

Even though she knew she would have to do all her own marketing by self-publishing, she wasn’t deterred. She’d seen other authors making it and she was confident she could do the same. One example in particular is successful UK indie author, Mark Dawson. After a couple of digital book failures, Mark chose to become an entrepreneur and learned how to market on a larger scale. One of his key strategies was to take the first book in one of his series and give it away for free.

At first that seemed to Norma Jean like a drastic measure. But the more she researched, this author of good books for teens came to see the wisdom of such a move. She then chose to do the same with her Norma Jean Lutz Classic Collection, a collection of six sweet teen romances that she authored in the 90s and is now re-releasing. After creating a marketing campaign around giving away a free copy of Flower in the Hills things began to escalate.

Joining the ranks of independent authors has made a huge difference for this author of clean teen reads. She now looks forward to a career that is void of rejection letters and the dreaded term – short shelf life.

“I can now freely bring out my past titles, and launch out to continue writing what I love – good books for teens – without a thought of whether or not a publisher thinks it might or might not sell. What freedom!”
