Just last week, evacuations were lifted for dozens of homeowners with properties in an area that had been threatened by a wildfire raging in the foothills outside of Ventura. It took approximately 600 firefighters to wrestle control of the blaze which was fueled by strong winds on a draught ravaged landscape.

While the promise of heavy rains from this year El Niño could bring much needed relief to fire prone areas across the state, wildfires consumed over 9.8 million acres in California last year according to some reports.

Traditionally, the month of May has been considered the start of wildfire season. However, warm weather and exceptionally dry conditions over the past several years have made wildfires a year round concern in many parts of the state. These wildfire concerns are not just about homes and business in the direct path of the flames, but also about smoke damage to the inside of properties that can be many miles away from the blaze.

“Thick wildfire smoke is a health concern for anyone breathing the air and for properties that sustain damages due to smoke infiltration,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “It is comprised of combustion by-products that include soot, ash and char. Smoke can not only leave behind unpleasant odors and residues, it can also cause corrosion, etching and discoloration on surfaces inside a property.”

Insurance policies frequently cover smoke damage, but it is often left to the property owner to provide proof of damages. LA Testing offers sampling supplies, analytical services and easy-to-use test kits to identify smoke residues to help with this process. These services are available to homeowners, property managers, tenants, insurance companies, and environmental contractors and consultants.

LA Testing has produced an educational video about smoke damage that can be viewed at:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owo8lIoVTuk.
