Metal Recycling Company that Violated Asbestos & Mercury Regulations Fined

Boston, MA – WEBWIRE

In August, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announced that a metal recycling business in the state has been assessed over $35,000 in penalties for violating mercury and asbestos regulations. MassDEP had inspected the recycling plant on two occasions in 2013 and found asbestos-containing materials on the ground that were not contained as well as recycling activities that did not remove components with mercury before crushing operations took place.

Pure mercury is a liquid metal, sometimes referred to as quicksilver that volatizes readily. It has traditionally been used to make products like thermometers, switches and some light bulbs.  Mercury exposure at high levels can harm the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs and immune system of people of all ages. It has been demonstrated that high levels of methylmercury in the bloodstream of unborn babies and young children may harm the developing nervous system.

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that in the past was added to many products to strengthen them and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance. When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed, asbestos fibers may be released into the air. Breathing asbestos fibers can lead to an increased risk of lung cancer and can cause mesothelioma and asbestosis.

“Exposure to both asbestos and mercury can be a hazard to not only workers, but also to people living in the area and the environment,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “As occurred at the recycling facility, failing to follow regulations regarding these materials can result in costly fines and cleanup costs to decontaminate and monitor an area.  At EMSL, we offer quick and affordable testing solutions for companies that handle these and other types of hazardous materials.  These services protect workers, the public, the environment, and provide the necessary information for companies to comply with regulations while avoiding fines and negative publicity.”
