Landlord Sued for Lead Exposure that Occurred 17 Years Ago

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

Earlier this summer, it was announced that a jury in Rhode Island has awarded a 19-year-old woman $125,000 in a lawsuit against her former landlord.  According the Providence Journal, with interest, the sum comes to $350,000 and was the result of lead poisoning that occurred when the plaintiff was only 2 years old.

The article states that the jury found the landlord had negligently concealed or failed to disclose lead paint issues. Although the woman only lived in the rental property for four months as a child, she reportedly suffers from brain injuries and a loss of IQ according to the law firm that represented her.

Lead-based paint (LBP) and lead contaminated dusts are some of the most hazardous sources of lead exposure for children and many homes and properties built before 1978 contain them.  In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that even today, there are at least 4 million households with children living in them that are being exposed to high levels of lead.

“While exposure to lead is dangerous for everyone, children are especially vulnerable,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead poisoning can lead to developmental delays, learning difficulties, hearing loss and numerous other issues.  Fortunately, testing for lead can identify exposure risks and is easily accomplished.  At EMSL, we offer comprehensive lead testing services for both the inside and outside of a property.  We even provide a Lead in Paint & Dust Test Kit that can quickly provide information about lead hazards.”
