California Parents Learn Major Retailer to Remove Phthalates from Vinyl Flooring

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Recently, CNN published a report about one of the nation’s largest home improvement retailers and their plans to stop selling vinyl flooring that contains a group of chemicals known as phthalates.  The new policy is expected to go into effect by the end of this year.

According to the article, tests on vinyl floor tiles by several public interest groups found 38 out of 65 tiles tested contained phthalates.  The tiles contained from 10 to 90 times higher limits than those regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for the chemicals’ presence in toys and children’s products.

Phthalates are used in hundreds of consumer products.  They can be found in some cosmetics and personal care products including perfume, hair spray, soap, shampoo, nail polish and skin moisturizers. They are also used in consumer products such as flexible plastic and vinyl toys, shower curtains, wallpaper, vinyl mini-blinds, food packaging and plastic wrap.  Phthalates can even be found in some wood finishes, detergents, adhesives, plastic plumbing pipes, lubricants, medical tubing and fluid bags, solvents, insecticides, medical devices and various building materials in addition to vinyl flooring.

“Phthalates are suspected to be endocrine disruptors and children exposed to these chemicals may be especially vulnerable,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Children spend a considerable amount of time playing on floors, so the news that it will be removed from vinyl flooring being offered in California and throughout the rest of the country by a major home improvement store is great news for parents.  For those concerned about exposure to phthalates, LA Testing offers comprehensive phthalate testing services so that parents can identify potential exposure hazards and keep their children away from these controversial chemicals.”

LA Testing has sponsored an educational video about phthalates in the home that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/u5jA4JWa9p8.
