Illinois American Water to Replace 7,500 Feet of Water Main in Sterling

Illinois American Water’s Sterling District is investing about $1.1 million to replace 7,500 feet of water main in Sterling. This work will enhance and maintain reliable, quality water service to customers while also supporting critical fire protection for public safety Illinois American Water’s main replacement program focuses on replacing mains where leaks occur, corrosion has caused damage or the size of the pipe isn’t sufficient. According to Steve Barnet, Operations Superintendent for the Sterling District, “The age of the pipes coupled with deterioration over the years make the project necessary.”

The pipe replacement projects, which will kick off next week, will take place in Sterling along West 18th Street between Avenue K to Shinkle Avenue; along West Lefevre Road between Woodburn Avenue to Bushman Avenue; and Dillon Avenue between West Lefevre Road to Lincoln Highway. Customers residing near the construction area will receive a mailer with Pertinent information about the projects. The main replacements are expected to be completed this September.“

Some of water main being replaced dates back to the 1940s. These projects benefit our customers as a whole because they help to reduce main breaks and related traffic and service impact. I want to thank our customers for their patience as our teams work in their neighborhoods,” said Barnet.

These investments include replacing thousands of miles of pipe and upgrades to treatment plants, storage tanks and other assets.
