Sharecare to Host Twitter Chat On Childhood Obesity

#KeepKidsHealthy Scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22, at 12p ET

ATLANTA – WEBWIRE

Sharecare, is hosting its first Twitter chat focused on ending childhood obesity on Thursday, January 22, from 12 pm to 3 pm EST using the hashtag #KeepKidsHealthy. Featuring leading experts and organizations ranging from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition to the American Heart Association, the chat will focus on ways to help families and children make better food choices, and improve diet and exercise habits to create a new generation of healthy young adults.

“It’s important we recognize that kids who develop unhealthy habits take them into adulthood, where they in turn teach their children the same bad habits – it’s a vicious cycle,” said Dr. Oz. “Generating more awareness about this critically important issue is key to breaking that cycle, and I’m pleased that so many of Sharecare’s partners are answering the call to do just that.”

According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese, placing them at a higher risk for prediabetes, bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems. In addition, children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.

“HealthCorps is leading a nationwide movement toward a new generation of healthy young people,” said Michelle Bouchard, President of HealthCorps, one of the organizations involved in the chat. “Everyday we work to inspire teens to make healthier choices for themselves and their families through our unique in school program. We are thrilled to be a part of this innovative effort on behalf of our nation’s youth.”
