DC Public Library chooses Preservica for digital preservation of valuable multi-media collections

Leading US public library uses Preservica Cloud Edition to ensure unique digitized and born-digital collections remain safe and accessible for generations to come

Washington DC, US and Oxford, UK – WEBWIRE

Preservica, part of the Tessella group, and a world leader in digital preservation technology, research and consulting, is pleased to announce that DC Public Library has chosen Preservica Cloud Edition to ensure its unique digital collections are securely preserved and accessible to researchers and the public long into the future.

The library’s extensive and varied multi-media collections include Clifford Berryman cartoons from the Washington Evening Star 1900 to 1948; photographs by Joseph Owen Curtis documenting the culture, social life, and architecture of Southwest Washington D.C. from the 1920s through the 1970s; oral histories of first-hand accounts of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963; and music, videos, images and other content from the DC Punk movement of the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Kim Zablud, Interim Assistant Director at DC Public Library adds, “Faced with a growing volume of born-digital content as well as content from our own digitization program we commissioned an independent study to outline what we needed to do to properly safeguard and make digital content accessible over the long term. A key recommendation was to ensure we had a standards-based Digital Preservation system to securely store and preserve digital content. Also as a relatively small department it was important that any system was fully hosted, managed and maintained for us in the Cloud – freeing our time to focus on our collections and not worry about having to integrate and maintain individual tools or buy and operate local servers and storage”.

“It was also important that the Digital Preservation system would not only store our digital content in a secure, durable way, but also make it easy for us to manage and migrate obsolete file formats to newer formats overtime, as well as give us the flexibility to exchange metadata with the Digital Public Library of America.”

Preservica Chief Executive Jon Tilbury adds, “We are very pleased that DC Public Library has joined the growing number of National, University and Public libraries using Preservica to provide active preservation and public access to their valuable digital collections. We also welcome DC Public Library’s contribution to the Preservica User Group and look forward to working with them to share ideas and shape the future of digital preservation and access”.

Preservica Cloud Edition, which is hosted on Amazon Web Services, is available from just $3,950 per year and includes a full suite of OAIS (Open Archival Information System) compatible workflows for ingest, management, storage, administration, preservation and access to digital content, as well as all hosting, backup, operations, maintenance and support to enable libraries, museums and archives of all sizes to actively preserve and share their valuable content from one system without needing to purchase and manage local servers and storage.
