Introducing the future of 4G: Telstra 4GX

WEBWIRE

Telstra today announced its new 4G service, which is bringing higher speeds and extra 4G coverage to a range of communities across the nation, will be called 4GX.

4GX will include services provided over Telstra’s new 700MHz spectrum and deliver higher typical mobile speeds on compatible devices, allowing more Australians to experience more reliable connections and ultra-fast mobile internet. It will also combine Telstra’s 1800MHz and 700MHz spectrum bands to provide even faster 4G mobile web speeds on compatible devices.

Unveiling the name today, Telstra announced the switch on of 4GX services in parts of Hobart and Brisbane – adding to the 4GX coverage already available in parts of Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and 10 regional centres.

Andrew Volard, Director of Devices at Telstra said the 4GX name was important as it would help customers understand where the new 4G service is available and the devices it is available on as it’s rolled out.

“As humans we love technology that allows us to go faster and connect in the moment. 4GX sets a new benchmark in mobile internet speeds in Australia allowing people to download, share, stream and connect faster and more reliably than ever,” Mr Volard said.

“Customers using devices such as the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Telstra Wi-Fi 4G Advanced II in 4GX areas are set to enjoy top speeds twice as fast as those available on our existing 4G.

“4GX also allows our customers to experience 4G in more places, with the low band spectrum offering extra in-building coverage and creating better 4G coverage in rural and regional areas than our existing 4G.”

Mr Volard said 4GX would serve as the foundation for the introduction of extra mobile calling features like Voice over LTE (VoLTE), HD Video calling and multi-media calling using VoLTE technology in the future.

The mark of high performance and reliable coverage
In 4GX areas, people with compatible devices can look forward to:
• The fastest 4G speeds in Australia – Customers with 4GX category 6 devices can enjoy download speeds of between 2Mbps and 100Mbps. Customers with 4GX category 4 devices can enjoy typical download speeds of between 2Mbps to 75Mbps.
• Extra 4G coverage – 4GX will boost in-building coverage for 4G services bringing speedy mobile web access to more offices, bedrooms and lifts. And in regional areas, 4GX can go further than Telstra’s existing 4G frequencies creating better 4G coverage.
• More 4G to share – 4GX will double Telstra’s 4G bandwidth allowing people to enjoy their favourite content with fewer slowdowns even in peak hour or in crowded places like shops or on the bus.

New communities to benefit as 4GX extends to all Capital CBDs and 50 Regional locations by January
Telstra today lit up 4GX services in Hobart where 4GX services were switched on in the CBD and 13 surrounding suburbs.Telstra will also kick mobile performance up a notch in selected parts of Brisbane on Wednesday including in the CBD and 9 surrounding suburbs.

In addition, Telstra announced 4GX services would be switched on this week in Albany, Ulladulla, Murray Bridge, Narrawallee, Shepparton, Bateman’s Bay, Swansea, Bunbury, Port Macquarie and Chinchilla bringing to 26 the number of communities already benefiting from the service.

“As the first carrier to bring 4G mobile services to regional Australia, we know how important high-speed mobile can be to supporting local businesses, tourism and making regional Australia a great place to live. Given this, we’re making the roll out of 4GX to our regional customers a high priority with at least 50 regional centres set to be connected by New Year’s Day.”

4GX services will cover all capital CBD centres (within three kilometres of the GPO) and 50 regional locations by January 1 2015 and will be expanded across Telstra’s mobile footprint over time.
