Sierra Club Endorses Staci Appel for U.S. Congress Nation’s Largest Grassroots Environmental Organization Praises Appel’s Commitment to Clean Energy and Climate Action

Des Moines, IA – WEBWIRE

Today, the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Democrat Staci Appel in the election for the open seat for Iowa’s Third Congressional District.

“Staci Appel is the right choice for Iowans who want to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and see real, positive change in Washington,” said Deborah Neustadt, Chair of the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club. “Appel is a champion for Iowa’s clean energy economy and will take that leadership to Washington, where she has committed to working across the aisle to double down on clean energy and fight climate disruption.”

Iowa ranks first in the nation in wind power generation with more than a quarter (27.4%) of the state’s electricity generation coming from wind in 2013. Iowa wind power has generated more than $10 billion in investment, pays more than $16 million a year in land lease agreements with farmers and others and has spurred the growth of 14 manufacturing facilities in the state to support the growing industry.

As State Senator, Staci Appel consistently supported Iowa’s enormous clean energy potential, sponsoring bills that advance clean energy in Iowa. Appel supports tax credits for small businesses that harness Iowa’s wind and solar energy and protections for Iowa’s corn growers.

“Iowa leads the nation in wind energy generation, and that’s in part thanks to Staci Appel’s leadership in Iowa,” said Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club. “We need champions like Staci Appel in Washington, rather than more climate deniers who are endangering farmers, families, and future generations.”

In the election for U.S. Congress, Staci Appel faces Republican David Young, who claims to have seen “credible studies” saying man-made climate disruption isn’t real.

"We have an obligation to leave the world a better place for our children, because if we don’t get this right nothing else matters” said Staci Appel, Congressional candidate in Iowa’s Third Congressional District. “It’s past time for Washington to work together to reverse climate change, protect our families and our environment.”

Victory Corps, a coordinated program of the Sierra Club Political Committee working in the 2014 mid-term election cycle to ensure Sierra Club members and supporters get out the vote, has deployed staff and volunteers to 13 U.S. House and Senate races around the country.

Paid for by the Sierra Club Political Committee, www.sierraclub.org, and authorized by Staci Appel for Congress.
