Round Rock, Texas – WEBWIRE

Dell today announced that McKinney, Texas, has deployed its end-to-end solutions to optimize IT performance, simplify database management, and achieve better visibility into critical systems, while boosting the city’s ability to offer modern applications to employees and residents.

Ranked by Money magazine in September 2014 as the best place to live in America, McKinney has a population of nearly 150,000, with 900 city employees. Its IT team supports more than 200 applications – including critical applications for the police and fire systems – as well as miles of network fiber and hundreds of switches and firewalls. To keep up with its growing infrastructure, the city needed a modern, integrated solution stack that would enable IT managers to monitor critical systems, optimize data center performance, and break down database silos for improved engineering capability. With the support of Dell Consulting Services, the city of McKinney was able to leverage its existing infrastructure, and adopted end-to-end Dell solutions to improve its visibility into critical applications, better integrate disparate databases, and diagnose application failures faster. As the city continues to grow, residents will be able to access an increasing number of modern applications, because the IT department will have more time to focus on application development.

Improved performance monitoring
After visiting Dell headquarters, the city’s IT team chose Foglight to monitor virtual servers, databases, web applications, middleware and overall infrastructure. Foglight combines application and database monitoring with infrastructure-performance monitoring in a single platform, and provides a real-time monitoring dashboard and automatic alerts to notify IT administrators of network or application problems.

As a result of the deployment, the city has increased its visibility into critical city web and legacy applications, and the IT team can easily – and quickly – troubleshoot issues to determine the root cause of the performance problem. With this improved view of all applications, the city can diagnose and fix application failures faster than before.

Foglight also enables the city to be more proactive, getting ahead of application problems before they happen. This is critical in an environment that includes police and fire services, where successfully dealing with application failures can mean the difference between life and death. The city also chose Dell’s Toad Data Modeler, a cross-platform database-modeling tool, to connect multiple disparate databases and natively and easily reverse- and forward-engineer databases. Toad Data Modeler also provides the IT team with detailed reports on database structures.

Optimized data center efficiency and performance
To gain better manageability and efficiency, the city also has deployed two Dell PowerEdge M1000e chassis, populated with PowerEdge blade servers, to improve troubleshooting capabilities in the data center. The solution’s separate control module and accompanying software allow the IT team to easily determine issues within the blade servers, and they can swap out a blade when problems arise. The city also plans to deploy the Dell Boomi AtomSphere integration platform as a service (iPaaS) to further improve integrations between different applications.

Paul Christman, vice president, Public Sector Sales and Marketing, Dell Software
“Today, customers like the city of McKinney need to be able to deploy fully integrated solutions that not only work seamlessly with existing infrastructure, but also reduce total cost of ownership. Bridging gaps in performance visibility, optimizing data center efficiency, and diagnosing application failure faster are must-have capabilities for any IT department looking to deliver modern and scalable services. We are pleased that our end-to-end approach allowed the city of McKinney to accelerate their IT modernization efforts and extend the lifecycle of existing IT investments.”

Chris Chiancone, CIO, City of McKinney
“With Dell, we now have a better ability to deliver cutting-edge applications to our customers. Foglight frees up more time for us to focus on application development, so, even though we have a legacy infrastructure, we can still do a lot of innovative things. And, once we have Dell Boomi in place, we’ll be able to offer more mobile opportunities using our existing systems, and we can give residents the ability to pay bills from their mobile devices. Dell is on the right track in terms of delivering solutions to customers, rather than just delivering products. That’s an important distinction, and it’s one of the biggest reasons for my strong confidence in Dell.”
