Newly Awarded Tokenization Patent Reinforces Liaison Technologies Continued Innovation in Data Management and Integration

Patent for securing Multiple Active Domains (MAD) eliminates risk of token collisions between users across geographies and large distributed organizations

With tokenization adoption steadily on the rise, Liaison Technologies, a global data management and integration company, today announced it has been awarded by the US Patent Office a patent covering systems and methods for maintaining data security across multiple active domains (MAD). The Liaison MAD technology is the latest in a line of innovations the company has brought to the data management and integration ecosystem, including a patent it received last year for format preserving tokenization™. The new patent for invention number US 8,806,204 eliminates the risk of token collisions by active users spread across geographies and large distributed corporations.

“Liaison has long been a leader in data security, which is part of the foundation that our cloud-based data management and integration platform is built on,” said Bruce Chen, chief technology officer at Liaison Technologies. “Our customers rely on us to deliver innovative solutions to meet, and often exceed, the toughest security requirements and compliance regulations. This patent affirms our ongoing commitment to developing pioneering solutions that safeguard against security threats, while allowing enterprises to effectively manage and protect their data, and that of their customers.”

Liaison’s MAD technology is part of Liaison Protect, the company’s encryption, tokenization and key management suite. The solution was developed in response to the inherent challenges associated with creating tokens that meet high volume demands across disparate geographical locations and large corporations. Applicable to multiple data types and industries, the MAD solution allows for tokens to be generated simultaneously at multiple locations without the possibility for the same tokens to be generated for different values – a condition that is referred to as a collision. For instance, if two different credit cards were assigned the same token as a surrogate value, the integrity of the data would be lost. This compromised data could negatively impact business processes, such as fraud detection and data loss prevention. Within healthcare, as an example, tokens can be used to anonymize the protected health information (PHI) within patient records used by healthcare providers. Liaison’s tokenization solution enables this form of data security for large healthcare organizations as well as those with geographical disparity.

Since the company’s inception in 2000, Liaison has cemented its first mover advantage in a number of strategic areas. The newest patent complements Liaison’s most recent invention for its format preserving tokenization technology, which allows sensitive information, such as credit card and social security numbers, to be stored as format preserving tokens that enable businesses to leverage the information in the same manner as if the original numbers had been preserved. Additionally, Liaison was the first to deliver a payment card industry (PCI) specific encryption and key management security solution to the market in 2005. In 2009, the company introduced the industry’s first commercially available, off-the-shelf tokenization solution. In 2011, Liaison was the first to offer cloud-based tokenization, which addressed not only credit card information, but all personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI).
