The American Red Cross today announced the launch of a new program that helps ensure employees meet state safety requirements with training based on voluntary safety guidelines from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The Red Cross OSHA 10 and 30 Hour Training Program, through Summit Training Source, available October 31, 2014, provides education for workers and employers on safety and health hazards and worker rights in the construction industry and workplaces that have factory, assembly line and plant employees. The Red Cross program is a key offering in its portfolio of health and safety services.

Commonly referred to in the industry as OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 training, OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 refer to 10-hour and 30-hour courses delivered online by OSHA-authorized providers or via classroom instruction by OSHA-authorized instructors. The 10-hour class, available in English and Spanish, is targeted for entry level workers, while the 30-hour course is for employees with safety responsibility, such as supervisors. The curriculum sets are designed for either general industry (manufacturing factory, assembly line and plant employees) or construction (employees who work at job sites). The Red Cross is promoting this training through its partnership with the Health & Safety Institute (HSI). HSI brand family member Summit Training Source is an OSHA-approved provider of online OSHA 10 and 30 hour training.

“The Red Cross OSHA offerings are among the most comprehensive in the nation,” said Dom Tolli, Vice President, Emerging Products and Workplace Safety at the Red Cross. “We are unique among OSHA training providers because we’re the only provider that offers First Aid/CPR/AED training as well as a number of highly sought-after preparedness programs such as Team First Aid Exercises, OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 provided by Summit Training Source, and the Ready Rating program for small businesses.”

On the job accidents and illnesses pose a major problem to companies. OSHA statistics show that 4,628 workers across multiple U.S. industries were killed on the job in 2012 – on average, more than 12 deaths every day. Some states and many contractors and unions have made completion of these safety programs mandatory. States with OSHA 10-hour construction training requirements are Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Nevada also requires OSHA 30-hour training for supervisors with mandatory 5-year training renewal.

OSHA has determined mandatory topics for each course. The remainder of the elective and optional training can be fulfilled through a number of topics selected by OSHA. Unlike other online providers who offer only a set library meeting these requirements, online OSHA 10 and 30 hour training provided through Red Cross allows companies to choose from a number of elective training based on industry, locality and need. Further optional topics are available as supplements.

The online OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 courses allow companies to track employee progress, schedule training, and view quiz scores. Classroom courses can be arranged as needed. The Red Cross program also provides printable temporary certificates of completion to use while waiting for the official wallet card from the U.S. Department of Labor.
