Sinch Launches New JavaScript SDK to Allow for Web In-App Calling and Messaging

New platform extends service to Web developers, adds call management to its popular SDKs, along with new features to debut at TechCrunch Disrupt SF Hackathon on Saturday, September 6 2014

San Francisco & Stockholm – WEBWIRE

Sinch today announced the launch of its new JavaScript SDK platform, along with advanced management, reporting and backend features, to complement its mobile APIs. The new product will make its debut at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Hackathon event, where Sinch is a partner level sponsor, offering a $5,000 grand prize for best Sinch app implementation.

Sinch is a leading communications platform that provides developers with the tools to capitalize on the massive demand among consumers for mobile and web communication features, enabling iOS, Android or Web developers to add a layer of voice and messaging to their apps, either for free or at fraction of the cost of competitors. Some of the early use cases have targeted developers in a broad range of app categories including travel, communications, gaming, social networking, commerce and dating, and the company is in final stages of discussions with a number of large, global partners.

Since the company’s spinout from mobile VoIP giant Rebtel with $12 million in funding in May 2014, Sinch has seen a massive surge in demand with a 300 percent increase in signups since launch. Widely known as having the industry’s easiest implementation process, today Sinch also announces it is adding approximately 200 developers a month, who are enlisting their SDK which can be integrated into any app with a few simple lines of code.

“We’ve been impressed by the growing demand and interest in Sinch from the developer community and are excited to help fuel next wave of innovative companies,” said Andreas Bernström, CEO of Sinch. “We think that features like chat and voice will remain two of the fastest-growing segments of web and mobile applications, and developers already realize they are critical to driving growth, user engagement, and sustained profitability. We believe we’ll see continued acceleration of demand and expect to be adding north of 500 developer partners a month by end of year.”

In-App Communications Instrumental to App Boom

According to VisionMobile, the app economy is on pace for $143 billion in revenue by 2016, with the mobile market for in-app communications similarly exploding, as demonstrated by Facebook’s purchase of WhatsApp in February for $16B, Viber ’s $900M acquisition by Rakuten , Tango’s recent valuation north of $1 billion, and Line filing for a $10 billion IPO. At the same time, the research firm predicts strong growth coming from the business and enterprise market, which is expected to climb to $58 billion by 2016, becoming more attractive for web development as smartphone sales slow.

At launch, Sinch’s mobile-first platform offered services including free calling, messaging, group messaging, SMS and call termination. And with today’s Beta launch, web based developers can extend those same suite of services to an even broader group of consumers. This will allow end users to communicate between each other from mobile devices to the web and help developers build out web based calling applications for both free and paid calls.

Along with today’s JavaScript offering, new features of the platform offering include:

- Back-end to back-end integration
- Ability to manage call flows (connect, disconnect, pause calls, etc.)
- REST APIs to send and deliver SMS text messages
- Real time reporting

Note: Registration for mobile top up SDK will be available during TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2014 with a Beta version available in October.

“Our goal with Sinch is to be simplest and most affordable solution for developers looking to add a useful social layer to their apps without compromising on quality, and today we’re excited to help our developer partners extend the value to millions of new customers across all major platforms,” said Daniel Forsman, COO of Sinch.

Originally incubated within mobile VoIP giant Rebtel as a developer API, Sinch benefits from a strong roster of investors including Index Ventures (investor in companies like Facebook, Dropbox and King) and Balderton Capital (whose portfolio includes MySQL and NaturalMotion ) . Sinch maintains offices in Stockholm and San Francisco with a team of 50 employees, with plans to grow by another 20 percent by end of year to address developer demand.
