$50 Million Claim for Mold-Related Illnesses at California Board of Equalization
Last month, the Sacramento Business Journal published a report about the ongoing problems at the building that houses the California Board of Equalization (BOE). According to the article, a new claim was recently filed on behalf of employees whose alleged health problems were due to mold at the BOE headquarters. A previous lawsuit concerning similar issues was settled in 2012. The latest claim seeks $50 million for medical care and treatment.
It does not take a lot of moisture for mold to flourish, even a small leak or a minor flooding event can be enough to allow mold to grow. In fact, under the right conditions, mold can begin to grow in as short as 24 to 48 hours. Buildings with structural issues that allow moisture to enter on a regular basis or do not adequately keep humidity levels low can experience ongoing mold issues that can escalate.
“Once mold is present, high levels of airborne spores and mold fragments can cause allergies, trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals and even lead to infections in some people,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Even low levels of mold can cause health issues for people who are particularly sensitive to its presence. LA Testing offers analytical services to identify all types of indoor contaminants, including mold, bacteria, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other allergens and potential asthma triggers.”
LA Testing recently sponsored an online video about what mold needs to grow indoors. It can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr6_zVT-SP0.
