San Diego Infections Possibly Linked to Contaminated Tattoo Ink

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Recently, San Diego’s Fox 5 broadcasted a report about several area residents that have been diagnosed with a rare bacterial infection.  The infections, caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), are being investigated by county health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

According to the report, both the ink and water used to dilute it are being investigated as potential sources of the NTM.  In addition to skin infections, NTM can cause pulmonary disease and other conditions.  NTM is commonly found in the natural environment, especially in areas associated with wet conditions.

Infections caused by microbial pathogens in contaminated products can and do occur on an all too frequent basis.  Medicines, food, cosmetics and other consumer goods have all been the cause of outbreaks in the recent past.  Not only can contaminated products result in infections and in extreme cases even tragic deaths, they also create legal liabilities, expensive recalls and create a public relations challenge for any companies involved with the products.

One California laboratory that provides both product testing and environmental analysis to help prevent these types of situations is LA Testing.  “Contaminated products can be the result of adulterated raw ingredients, improper storage techniques, unsanitary manufacturing conditions and a host of other reasons,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “LA Testing and their affiliate laboratories offer consumers, manufacturers, importers and retailers with a wide range of testing options to prevent contaminated products from reaching consumers and creating legal liabilities.”
