Could Your Summer Vacation Hotel Expose Family Members to Mold or Other Contaminants?

Late last month, ABC affiliate WZZM broadcasted a report about workers from a Michigan hotel who had walked off the job and were protesting on the street.  The protest was not caused by a typical labor dispute, but rather due to what they feel are unsafe conditions for workers and hotel guests. The cause of the workers’ protest in this case was the presence of mold in the hotel that they feel is not being properly addressed.

With the summer season in full swing, hotels and resorts in many parts of the country are busy providing lodging and other services to families on vacation.  In the United States, people spend over $150 billion each year at over 50,000 properties that provide lodging in approximately 5 million guest rooms.  Hotels, as is the case with virtually any type of building, can face a wide range of indoor environmental quality challenges.  In addition to mold, guests and workers may be exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), various allergens, community acquired infectious agents, Legionella, environmental tobacco smoke, radon, lead, asbestos and even bed bugs to name a few potential issues.
