Morristown Medical Center Retains Status as Prestigious Magnet Hospital

Morristown, NJ – WEBWIRE

Morristown Medical Center has achieved Magnet® recognition for a fourth consecutive time as a reflection of its nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. Magnet recognition is determined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, which ensures that rigorous standards for nursing excellence are met. Only seven percent of hospitals worldwide receive the designation, and of those, less than one percent has received it four times.

The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Consumers rely on Magnet designation as the ultimate credential for high quality nursing.

Deborah Zimmerman, RN, DNP, NEA-BC, chair of the Commission on Magnet Recognition, shared the news via conference call on Tuesday. Dr. Zimmerman said, “Morristown Medical Center is an organization that exudes Magnet standards.” She added, “This institution exemplifies quality, transformational leadership, interdisciplinary collaborations and outstanding patient care.”

The ANCC highlighted the strong support for Morristown’s nursing staff by physicians, participation and support from Atlantic Health System’s board of trustees and recognition and partnership between allied health care givers, the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization and the nursing staff.

“Being re-designated as a Magnet institution is a great honor,” said Trish O’Keefe, PhD, RN, NE-BC, chief nursing officer and chief experience officer for Morristown Medical Center. “Our nurses care for each patient like they would for their own family member or loved one. This recognition is a testament to the strong dedication, vision and teamwork that has put Morristown Medical Center in the top one percent.”

Dr. Zimmerman concluded her remarks by saying, “Morristown Medical Center is a dynamic organization focused on achieving great outcomes with a spirit that is awe-inspiring.”

To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. Morristown Medical Center has been recognized by Magnet for 13 years and this distinction will continue through 2018.

The Magnet designation has become the gold standard for nursing excellence and is taken into consideration when the public judges healthcare organizations. In fact, U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care. The recognition is noted by nursing schools who recommend Magnet institutions to students who are seeking hospitals that offer support for education and professional development. As a Magnet hospital, the organization has an infrastructure to empower bedside staff, support educational advancement and certification. Nurses at Magnet hospitals are also more frequently sought to participate in research projects throughout the country.

“Magnet recognition provides our community with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of patient care,” O’Keefe said. “Achieving Magnet recognition again reinforces the culture of excellence that is a cornerstone of how we serve our community. It’s also the tangible evidence of our nurses’ commitment to providing the very best care to our patients, of which we are extremely proud.”
