Food Labeling Issue and Undeclared Allergen Results in Recall

St. Louis, MO – WEBWIRE

Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that a Missouri company was recalling approximately 96,000 pounds of hot dog products.  Some labels used on the recalled items were for another type of hot dog that did not contain pasteurized cheese.  The hot dogs may actually contain the cheese product that was formulated with milk, a known allergen.  The 16-ounce packages have a “Use by 16 June 2014” date on them, and were produced on March 2nd and 3rd before being shipped to distribution centers and retail locations nationwide.

Food allergies are a common concern for millions of Americans.  Allergic reactions to milk, egg, soy, wheat, peanut, tree nut, fish and shellfish account for up to 90% of reactions to food allergens. These allergies occur when a person’s immune system attacks a food protein and the results can be deadly in some cases.

One of the leading food testing companies that provides allergen testing services in North America is EMSL Analytical, Inc.  Fortunately, so far there have not been any reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of the hot dogs under the current recall,” reported Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., RM (NRM), CFSP, National Food Director at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Undeclared allergens in food products occur quite frequently.  In addition to the hot dog recall, there were also recalls in April for undeclared allergens from other food manufacturers that involved chicken and pork products and dehydrated pasta.”
