Irwindale Continues Battle with Food Manufacturer over Unresolved Odor Complaints

Late last month, Fox News published a report about the ongoing battle between the California manufacturer of a hot sauce and the Irwindale City Council.  The article states that in late April, the Irwindale City Council decided to temporarily delay their decision on whether or not to declare the manufacturing plant a public nuisance.
 
Meanwhile, it has also been reported that U.S. Representative Tony Cardenas recently visited the plant and is trying to get the plant to relocate to his district if they are unable to resolve the ongoing issues in Irwindale.
 
Odor complaints brought the story to the national media’s attention last year when a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge ordered the manufacturer of the spicy condiment to take steps to reduce the strong odor.  The judge’s order was an interim measure while the court considered the residents’ complaints.  If the Irwindale City Council votes to declare the plant a public nuisance, the plant would have 90 days to stop releasing the spicy fumes into the air.
 
Odor complaints occur on a frequent basis, although most cases don’t get the level of attention this case has received.  As cities have grown, many neighborhoods have been built in areas that used to provide a buffer for odors from manufacturing facilities.  “Odors from industry and even agricultural operations can create concerns for nearby residents about their health and could even impact their property values,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “At LA Testing, we provide scientific answers to odors concerns through advanced analytical techniques that utilize state of the art equipment.  The results can provide evidence of what is in the air and at what concentrations.”
