Mold Contamination Results in Emergency Meeting in Virgin Islands

Zimmetry Environmental provides environmental testing and consulting services to identify and resolve health and safety concerns involving mold.

Molds produce allergens, irritants, and, in some cases, toxic substances known as mycotoxins.

Last month, the Virgin Island Daily News published a report that the St. Croix District Board of Elections would meet in an emergency session to discuss an ongoing mold problem that was discovered in their Sunny Isle Annex office.  The article states that there have been a number of complaints from employees impacted by the mold.

Although mold is a natural part of the environment and can be found all across the Caribbean, having it grow indoors and exposing people to high levels in the air they breathe can lead to serious health concerns.  Molds produce allergens, irritants, and, in some cases, toxic substances known as mycotoxins.

Allergic reactions to mold are quite common and can be immediate or delayed. Repeated or single exposure to mold, mold spores, or mold fragments may cause non-sensitive individuals to become sensitive to mold.  Repeated exposures have the potential to increase sensitivity.

“Exposure to mold can even trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “As an irritant, mold can impact people’s eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs whether or not they are allergic to mold.  Breathing in mold may also cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a disease that resembles bacterial pneumonia. In addition, exposure to certain types of mold often found in moldy indoor environments, such as Aspergillus, may result in opportunistic infections in a person whose immune system is weakened or suppressed.  It is because of all of these health concerns that problems with mold need to be addressed quickly and effectively.  At Zimmetry, we have indoor air quality professionals based in Puerto Rico that respond to these types of scenarios at a moments’ notice all across the Caribbean,” he continued.

In addition to indoor mold problems, Zimmetry has experts ready to take action to identify and resolve sick building, environmental compliance, indoor air quality, asbestos, lead-based paint, Phase I ESAs and general environmental consulting issues.  To learn more about Zimmetry Environmental and their services, please visit www.zimmetry.com, call (787) 995.0005 or email info@zimmetry.com .
