The code-cracking, crime-solving heroines of the Bletchley Circle are back, in The Bletchley Circle Series Two DVD, now available to pre-order from the Acorn online store.

With a whipsmart cast of female leads, an attractive period setting and a thrillingly dark narrative, The Bletchley Circle has been a runaway hit in the US and here in the UK, where it screens on ITV.

Series One of the Bletchley Circle is already available on DVD from the Acorn online store and now fans can snare a copy of Series Two and receive their copy immediately upon release.

Opening in the aftermath of World War II, The Bletchley Circle is a murder mystery which follows a team of former Bletchley Park codebreakers who turn their attention to solving a series of grisly murders. They see a pattern but the police don’t, so they decide to take matters into their own hands.

One of the reasons that the show is so important is that its protagonists are all tough, resourceful… and female. It proves that British audiences, and those overseas, are ready to buy in to stories driven by female characters.

Julie Graham, who plays Jean, the old head of the group, recently told the Radio Times that shows centred on women had not come a moment too soon.

She said: “I think [The Bletchley Circle] is breaking boundaries but I also think about bloody time.

“Things have been changing. They prove that people do want to watch female-led dramas. It’s definitely changed in the last few years, thanks the Lord.”

That the strong female leads of a hit drama are Bletchley Park code-breakers is even more poignant.

Anna Maxwell-Martin, who plays Susan, recently told The Express: “I’ve had people coming out of the woodwork saying, ‘My mum or aunt was at Bletchley and we never knew until after they died’. As a woman, you weren’t able to reveal actually how intelligent you really were, that you had been picked out to be part of this extraordinary thing.”

The Bletchley Circle Series 2 DVD is expected to be as popular with shoppers as the show is with TV viewers. But Acorn customers can make they get their hands on a copy by pre-ordering today.
