HARTFORD, Conn. -- Aetna (NYSE: AET) announced that Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies will be added to the preferred pharmacy network of the Aetna CVS/pharmacy Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) as of January 1, 2014.

The Aetna CVS/pharmacy Prescription Drug Plan offers a median $32 monthly plan premium,* as well as low, fixed copays for generic medicines. Medicare beneficiaries who sign up for this plan and fill their prescriptions at a Walmart or Sam’s Club pharmacy may realize savings on their out-of-pocket prescription drug costs. By filling prescription drugs at these preferred pharmacies, as compared to a non-preferred network pharmacy, plan members will:

Pay a low $2 copayment for nearly 800 preferred generic drugs in most states; and
Pay a low $1 copayment in all states for specialty generic drugs that are commonly used for the treatment of hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes.

“We are committed to providing excellent quality and value to our Medicare members,” said Nancy Cocozza, president of Aetna’s Medicare business. “The addition of Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies to the preferred pharmacy network for this plan offers members greater affordability when they purchase medicines at one of these popular pharmacy chains.”

The Aetna CVS/pharmacy Prescription Drug Plan is available in 43 states and the District of Columbia, and it offers Medicare beneficiaries value along with access to experienced pharmacists and the convenience of shopping at neighborhood pharmacies. The plan’s preferred pharmacy network comprises 4,200 Walmart, 580 Sam’s Club and 7,500 CVS/pharmacy locations. In addition to the preferred pharmacy network, members can also use any of the 52,700 pharmacies in the Aetna Medicare network.

*Median $32 monthly plan premium is the median of the plan premiums in the 27 CMS regions (44 states and Washington, D.C.) where the plan is offered.
**$3 copayment for preferred generic drugs is available in Hawaii and New Mexico.
