EMSL scientist, Dr. Zelijko Jurjevic, and colleague Stephen W. Peterson from the USDA, Peoria, IL, have contributed to the discovery of a new fungal species known as Talaromyces columbinus sp. nov., a potential human pathogen.

Talaromyces columbinus has previously been reported as a causal organism in certain human lung infections under the name Penicillium piceum.

This new fungus was isolated from environmental samples across the United States, including a sample of corn products.

The research has been published in the October 2013 issue of PLoS One http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0078084 (Volume 8: Issue 10: e78084).

“EMSL is proud to have scientists that contribute to the industry at such a sophisticated level, demonstrating the quality of our microbiology divisions,” states Dr. Jason Dobranic, EMSL Analytical Inc.’s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences. “EMSL Analytical provides advanced testing to detect microorganisms in environmental samples at our fully equipped and accredited microbiology laboratories located throughout the United States.”
