Fun, active lifestyle meshes with Dance Trance regimen

The Void office crew showed up at Dance Trance in their workout gear and quickly learned, in the words of one of them, “this wasn’t anything like a traditional fitness class.” An even happier realization was that the dance moves were relatively easy to learn, thanks to careful orchestration of the moves by the instructor.
 
“All in all, everyone worked up a sweat and had a heck of a time,” said a spokesman from Void, the high-energy publication that covers the surfing, sports and young lifestyle scene around Jacksonville.
 
Dance Trance is a perfect fit for the active lifestyle. Its instructors lead exercisers with dance motions that work every inch of a body with song-specific exercise steps.  Music and dance steps vary from session to session so a sense of expectation keeps exercisers coming back week after week.
 
Because some people dance better than others, Dance Trance sessions are structured and stratified so that beginners can learn the moves without enduring amused glances from more advanced dancers. Sessions are divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced groups.
 
It all began 20 years ago when Jay and Beth Handline decided to merge dancing and exercise. They did so with the full intention of being in the fitness business rather than the club scene. Losing weight and/or becoming fit is the whole point of their business.
 
“We want our students to come because they love the scene, but go home feeling satisfaction for having strengthened their bodies,” says Beth Handline.  
 
Dance Trance licensures are scattered across the U.S. and in various foreign countries, including England, Croatia—and Saudi Arabia. Besides the licensure centers themselves, Dance Trance markets a series of popular “DT” videos and dance wear lines. The company is headquartered in Jacksonville.
