Earlier this month, the California Senate easily passed Assembly Bill 711 which had previously been passed in the Assembly back in May. The new legislation, if signed by the governor, would make California the first state to require the use of non-lead ammunition for the taking of all wildlife in California.  It would include hunting for game mammals, game birds, nongame birds and nongame mammals, with any firearm.

The controversy over potential hazards associated with lead ammunition has gained national attention over the past few years. California’s proposed regulations have created disagreement between hunters, the gun industry and some environmentalists.

Many advocates of the lead ban point to the harm lead causes to animals such as the California Condor. Today, researchers state that lead is the leading cause of death for the birds when they consume carcasses left behind by hunters. Assembly Member Anthony Rendon was recently quoted as stating, “Scientific evidence is clear that there is no safe level of lead exposure to humans or wildlife.”

Over the past several decades, the dangers of exposure to the metal from lead-based paints and leaded gasoline resulted in regulations meant to protect people, and especially children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states, “Today at least 4 million households have children living in them that are being exposed to lead. There are approximately half a million U.S. children ages 1-5 with blood lead levels above 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL), the reference level at which CDC recommends public health actions be initiated.”

One of the leading providers of lead testing services in California is LA Testing. LA Testing has a network of laboratories that offer testing supplies, analysis and even field test kits for lead. “Exposure to lead can affect nearly every system in the body,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “Fortunately, testing for lead in environmental samples and indoor environments is a quick and affordable test that can help to prevent people and wildlife from exposure to this toxic heavy metal.”

LA Testing and their affiliate, EMSL Analytical, Inc., have sponsored an educational video about lead hazards in the home.  It can be seen at:
