Women on Fire Sponsors “Girl Rising” at Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival

Martha’s Vineyard, MA – National women’s organization Women on Fire announced last week that it will sponsor a screening of 10x10’s documentary “Girl Rising” on Martha’s Vineyard on Sunday, September 8. The screening will be hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society and featured as a part of the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival held this weekend.

The film was co-written by 9 women from 9 countries, with one of the writers Luong Ung, a former orphan of Cambodia who fled poverty and political turmoil, becoming one of the country’s top human rights activists and landmine free advocates. Ung has been involved with Women on Fire since its beginning in 2003.  Women on Fire supports women of all ages and backgrounds to live lives they dream of, and promotes opportunities and education for girls around the world.

“A rising tide lifts all boats, and it is essential for women to work together to provide opportunities and voices to the millions of females around the world who have been abused and marginalized simply because they are women and girls,” says Women on Fire Founder Debbie Phillips.  “Girl Rising” is one of the most important commentaries on how to provide positive futures for females globally that I’ve ever seen.”

The screening will take place at the Capawock Theatre at 2 PM on Sunday, and tickets can be purchased through the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society website. mvfilmsociety.com
