easyJet flies to the rescue of Luton’s Christmas lights

easyJet, the UK’s largest airline and biggest operator at London Luton Airport, has come to the rescue of Luton’s Christmas lights after Luton Borough Council had announced the festivities were at risk this year because of enforced efficiency savings.

Now, with just over 100 days to go until the big day, Christmas has come early in Luton with two of easyJet’s cabin crew and the airline’s very own Santa joining forces outside the Town Hall to celebrate the announcement today.

The airline has provided sponsorship in partnership with the Love Luton campaign to ensure that the tradition of illuminating Luton’s town centre, which dates back more than 20 years, can continue.

Festive lights in Luton are erected in George Street, between the Town Hall and Park Street, and are switched on at the popular annual Lighting Up Luton celebration which this year will take place on Saturday 7 December.

Hugh Aitken, easyJet’s UK Commercial Manager, said: “We were only too happy to step in and make sure that Luton town centre was not left in the dark this festive season. We are one of the region’s biggest employers and recognise the importance of bringing people together and supporting our local community. Everyone at easyJet is looking forward to this year’s switch-on event.”

Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Borough Council, said: “The Council is currently having to work hard to find new ways of funding many important and valued services and the popular Christmas lights have been no exception. It’s absolutely fantastic that one of our most important companies has been able to step in and make sure the town centre is again illuminated this festive season.”

Andrew McConnell, Chairman of Love Luton, added: “Love Luton has gone from strength to strength this year, and we are delighted to be able to support yet another high-profile Luton event. The festivities bring the people of Luton, our vibrant and richly diverse community together for a celebration that brings so much joy to those who attend.”

Lighting Up Luton brings the magic of Christmas to the town centre, with street entertainers and children’s rides, local craft and gift market, carol competition and lantern parade all leading up to the big switch-on. More details will be announced shortly.
