Bryn Mawr, PA - Six years ago in September 2007, Sarto Schickel’s wife, Sun Hee Lee, had a bad cough that she hoped was bronchitis and not something more serious. She also had a bloated abdomen and some shortness of breath. She went to a doctor in Philadelphia who diagnosed stage IV ovarian cancer that had already spread from the abdominal cavity to the chest cavity, where she had a large fluid build-up called a malignant pleural effusion, and partially collapsed right lung. It was the shock of a lifetime. Sun Hee is the mother of two young daughters and wanted desperately to live.

While over 40% of all ovarian cancer patients live five years or longer, only about 15% of those with stage IV ovarian cancer live that long––and those with a malignant pleural effusion live an average of only about 6 months, with 80% gone in the first year.

It was an existential crisis. Next month, in September 2013, Sun Hee is celebrating the six year mark. What was the secret of her apparently miraculous recovery. Sun Hee credits excellent conventional and alternative doctors, as well as family and friends who gave her an unusual amount of support including prayers, food, a benefit concert and more. She also had two unique resources backing her up––a husband with a keen interest in healing with natural foods and integrative cancer therapies , and his uncle, William Schickel, the artist and designer, then living in Loveland, Ohio.

Her husband, author Sarto Schickel, encouraged Sun Hee to use a therapy that his uncle had used in 1952 to recover from advanced lymphosarcoma. He had used a natural cancer treatment called Gerson Therapy , created by the German-Jewish doctor, Max Gerson, M.D. In fact, Bill Schickel had been a direct patient of Dr. Gerson. He recovered over a two year period and lived fifty-seven more years until one month shy of this 90th birthday in 2009. Bill was a great inspiration to Sun Hee, who was looking for a model of success, for what appeared to be a terminal illness.

Sun Hee looked at all her options and said “yes” to Gerson Therapy, to surgery, to limited chemotherapy and to some macrobiotic dietary influence. In essence, she created her own unique integrative program for cancer, with her husband’s guidance, after visiting and consulting with conventional and alternative doctors and a macrobiotic counselor. Her integrative approach included surgery and chemotherapy at a Philadelphia area hospital and a trip to a Gerson Clinic in Mexico for 10 days.

Today Sun Hee follows a combination of Gerson and macrobiotic dietary patterns believing that both systems have unique and valuable benefits.

Sun Hee’s remarkable ovarian cancer recovery story  is documented in detail in an inspiring book entitled “Cancer Healing Odyssey” (Paxdieta Books, 2012) by Sarto Schickel.

In addition to the compelling personal story, the book includes medical reports, four x-rays showing the complete disappearance of the pleural effusion, a summary of CA-125 blood test results (the ovarian cancer tumor marker) as well as the recipes she used during the various phases of her recovery.

The book is meant to give hope to others by showing how one woman overcame the odds through love, medicine and natural cancer therapies, including a lot of time in the kitchen preparing the organic whole foods and juices that were the backbone of her integrative nutrition.
