Host Applications Move into Modern Java Environments

Fujitsu Siemens Computers BeanConnect now integrates bidirectional transactions on the basis of Java Connector Architecture 1.5

Munich , Aug 02, 2006, Fujitsu Siemens Computers now introduces a new version of its BeanConnect adapter family within the framework of its openSEAS middleware suite to enable companies to plug their high-end openUTM transaction monitors from Fujitsu Siemens Computers and IBM CICS into J2EE application servers in a standardized way. In compliance with the Java Connector Architecture (JCA) 1.5, each of the host applications can be integrated with modern Java applications or used as a web service in service-oriented architectures (SOA). One of the special advantages lies in the further dynamization of the data center: Host systems are no longer relegated to the role of just accepting jobs, they can now actively take advantage of new bidirectional communications options. BeanConnect V2.0 is available for the UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms.

To comply with the high consistency and security requirements of host applications designed for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), BeanConnect V2.0 guarantees full transaction security. In addition, the new version allows bidirectional communication, which means that either the Java components or the OLTP application can initiate a transaction. Since it supports JCA 1.5, BeanConnect can be used in combination with any JCA 1.5-compliant J2EE application server. Thanks to the partnership with Oracle, interoperability is pre-tested with the Oracle Application Server 10g in the standard package and regular updates will also be available. Additional service packages ensure that the application will also run on other application servers.

In many companies and public offices, complex individual applications comprise the critical business processes and sensitive corporate data. A large part of these legacy applications have been created for Online Transaction Processing and are controlled by conventional transaction monitors such as openUTM or CICS. Decades of development work are usually invested in mainframe-based transaction applications, therefore their functionality cannot simply be reprogrammed in new applications. Migrating to a new system would not only be extremely expensive, it would also involve an enormous risk for business management. Nevertheless, companies now face the challenge of integrating indispensable host applications into modern IT infrastructures.

High Investment Protection
With BeanConnect V2.0, Fujitsu Siemens Computers now offers an efficient solution that brings with it the best prerequisites for implementation into heterogeneous transaction environments. Any previous investments in openUTM and CICS applications remain fully intact. At the same time, the JCA-compliant adapter enables transaction-secured connectivity to new Java-based applications. With the imbedded implementation of the corresponding host communication protocols, BeanConnect provides direct access to OLTP applications. It also supports synchronous as well as asynchronous communications. Particularly important is, that the host systems support inbound as well as outbound message delivery, since this is the only way to really use the internal communications of the host applications. In addition to bidirectional communications, most business processes also require high transaction security – especially when the associated systems are updated and the consistency of the distributed databases has to be guaranteed. The BeanConnect transaction concept ensures that each transaction is completed as expected or reset so that any malfunctions that might occur during a power failure, for example, do not result in data inconsistency.

“The openSEAS middleware suite is a central building block in TRIOLE – our strategy for a flexible, efficient IT system,” said Dieter Herzog, Executive Vice President Enterprise Products, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “The introduction of dynamic IT infrastructures demands solutions that ensure data exchange between new and existing applications. BeanConnect delivers exactly the pragmatic, reliable solution that is needed. Thanks to our close cooperation with Oracle in middleware, BeanConnect has been finely tuned to the Oracle application server. Customers therefore profit from quicker application development, better investment protection and qualified services along with an uncomplicated implementation of the solutions.”
