Onda Solare presented at Ferrari Museum in Maranello

Italian Team leaving for Australian World Solar Challenge 2013

This morning the solar car from Onda Solare was presented at the Ferrari museum in Maranello. The car will participate in the Australian WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE 2013 under the name of Emilia III. After two previous participations the new car has been developed thanks to intense work by teachers, students and young researchers from the University of Bologna - who were responsible for the electric-electronic soul of the car - as well as IPSIA Ferrari, the technical school in Maranello. Here students and teachers of the prototype course are working on the development of means of transport with zero emission. The ambitious project was supported by numerous companies from the region with innovative and avant-garde components.

The car, made of carbon fibre and composite material, only weighs 180 kg and has to cover a distance of 3,000 km powered by solar energy. Therefore the car relies on 391 photovoltaic cells.

Emilia III will participate in the race with three drivers and 20 members of the team Onda Solare in October in Australia from Darwin to Adelaide through the Australian bush.

The Onda Solare team gained good results in the first two edition of the race and the new technology introduced with Emilia III might lead to an even better performance this year.

As for the previous two editions Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo and Vice Chairman Piero Ferrari wished the team all the best. One has to remember that IPSIA, the technical school in Maranello, has been created by Enzo Ferrari to educate technicians for the company of the Prancing Horse.
