The 2013 annual migration show has just began. The first animals from the Serengeti arrived Mara in the last week of June. What exactly is this Annual Migration in Serengeti and Masai Mara?
The wildebeest, also known as gnu, are herbivorous mammals found in acacia savanna and plains of East Africa. Their habitat includes grassy plains and open woodland. The annual migration of Wildebeest is considered among the `Seven Wonders of the world’. The animals move from the southern to the eastern plains of Serengeti before reaching Maasai Mara.

The animals move in seasons in search of pasture making it a little difficult to predict where the migration will be at a given period since the movement depends highly on the weather patterns which can vary to the extent of more than 2 months. The migration occurs in a clockwise as the large herd spread across the Serengeti plains to different directions in search of fresh grass.

More than 500,000 calves are born at the beginning of the rainy season in Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area where the migration begins. The wildebeest migrate accompanied by thousands of Zebra and gazelles contributing to a total of over about 2 million animals. Zebra has a strong sense of smell thus regarded as the forerunners of the wildebeest. 

The crocodiles are not the only predators as there are Lions, Leopards and hyenas among other wild dogs waiting when they are finally on the land.
