Last month, KUSA-TV broadcasted a report about a Colorado family forced to live in a trailer on the property of their home. Before moving into the temporary trailer, the family of six had suffered from various ailments caused by hidden mold in the family’s dream home.

An environmental expert located the source of the family’s problems in the home’s attic. A slow roof leak was allowing moisture into the attic that resulted in mold growth.

“Unfortunately, cases of hidden mold occur on a regular basis,” reported Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Mold may be hidden in places such as behind dry wall, wallpaper and paneling, or it may be located above ceilings, under cabinets, carpets and carpet pads. Hidden mold can also be found inside walls around pipes due to leaking or condensing pipes, the surface of walls behind furniture where condensation may form, inside ductwork and in attics and basements caused by leaks or insufficient insulation. There are so many places in a typical structure that can succumb to mold growth if water or elevated humidity levels are present,” he continued.

Many building materials and furnishing make for an ideal food source for mold. Moisture control is crucial in all of these cases as mold can begin to grow indoors in as short as 24 to 48 hours when conditions are right. When elevated levels of mold are found indoors they can cause allergies, trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals and even lead to infections in some people.

EMSL provides testing supplies and analysis to help environmental professionals and the public identify indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns due to mold. To inform the public of this issue, EMSL recently sponsored an online video about hidden mold in homes and buildings that can be viewed at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkCrTSVhHkM
