Polychlorinated biphenyls, commonly known as PCBs, are man-made toxic chemicals that persist in the environment and can bioaccumulate in living organisms. PCBs were manufactured in the United States up until the late 1970s when their manufacture was banned due to health and environmental concerns.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), studies have shown that PCBs cause cancer in animals and have non-cancer effects on the immune system, reproductive system and endocrine system. In addition, new research indicates that prenatal exposure to the chemicals can lead to low birth weight, stunted growth, asthma, immune weakness, Attention Deficit Disorder, memory problems and decreased IQ.

PCBs have a range of toxicity and vary in consistency from thin, light-colored liquids to yellow or black waxy solids. Due to their non-flammability, chemical stability, high boiling point and electrical insulating properties, PCBs were used in hundreds of industrial and commercial applications. These applications include electrical, heat transfer and hydraulic equipment; as plasticizers in paints, plastics and rubber products; in pigments, dyes and carbonless copy paper; and numerous other industrial applications.

“EMSL provides PCB testing services to industry, regulators and the general public from a wide variety of matrices,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL offers PCB air testing by EPA Compendium Method TO-4A, EPA Compendium Method TO-10A and NIOSH 5503. EMSL’s NELAC Accredited Environmental Chemistry Laboratory has extensive experience analyzing caulk, paint chips, wipes, concrete samples and other materials for PCBs.”
