Carrefour is Partner to European Sustainable Energy Week

WEBWIRE

For European Sustainable Energy Week, taking place from 24 to 28 June 2013, the Carrefour Group has teamed up with the European Commission to raise consumers’ awareness of the need to reduce energy consumption.

An in-store awareness campaign has been launched in four European countries where 40 stores are equipped with an innovative cooling system based on natural fluids: Belgium, Spain, France, Italy. By installing this new equipment that operates on natural fluids (emitting an average of 50 times less greenhouse gas), Carrefour is reducing its impact on the climate and saving about 20 percent in energy. It is an initial stage that will be expanded to all its new equipment starting in 2015. Within the framework of the European Sustainable Energy week, an awareness campaign in store is in progress in Italy and in Spain.

Reducing the environmental impact of Carrefour’s activities is at the heart of its sustainable development approach. By 2020, the Carrefour Group is determined to reduce its energy consumption per square metre of sales area by 30 percent compared to 2004 levels, and to reduce its 2009-level CO2 emissions by 40 percent (in Belgium, Spain, France and Italy).
