FDADetain.com Launched by EMSL Analytical to Assist Companies Importing Goods

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is tasked with enforcing the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C) and other applicable laws. According to the FDA, “With the exception of most meat and poultry, all food, drugs, biologics, cosmetics, medical devices, and electronic products that emit radiation, as defined in the FD&C and related Acts, are subject to examination by FDA when they are being imported or offered for import into the United States.”
 
Imported products are required to meet the same standards as domestically produced goods. Foods brought into the country must be safe to eat and produced under sanitary conditions. Drugs must be safe and effective and cosmetics need to be safe for their intended uses. These products must have proper labeling and contain accurate information in English.
 
The FDA, in conjunction with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, enforces these regulations on imported goods. The FDA can detain imports that may have been adulterated or misbranded. Products that have been subject to detention may be permitted if acceptable independent laboratory results show that the materials are in compliance with FD&C.
