Fil Adams-Mercer, founder of leading online delivery service Parcel2Go, has advised would-be entrepreneurs to consider starting out by using online marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay to sell goods.

In an interview for the Parcel2Go blog, Adams-Mercer looked back on his own experiences in the world of business and offered a range of tips to those considering starting a business of their own. He also provided a business plan which he believes could potentially prove lucrative for budding businesspeople.

Adams-Mercer noted the popularity of online marketplaces, and said Amazon and eBay both offered a number of advantages for new start-ups looking to establish themselves.

“For a short while, the internet has thrown out a level playing field because you can give people the illusion that you’re working out of a massive factory when you’re actually working out of your bedroom,” he observed, nothing that thorough market knowledge was the key to success.

“You have to treat people right and marketplaces like eBay and Amazon have got all the checks and balances in place to make sure that you do,” he added.

In addition, Adams-Mercer pointed out that carrying out in-depth market research was relatively simple thanks to the online tools offered by the likes of Google, eBay and Amazon. While he said he’d always eschewed business plans, he stressed the importance of building strong relationships with individual customers.

Adams-Mercer warned aspiring entrepreneurs that while there was always the risk of being “ripped off” in business, they need to be prepared to take risks in order to succeed. He also reminisced about his formative years in Bolton, where he grew up and got his first taste for business at the age of nine, working on a fruit and veg stall in the town.
