In this series of paintings and photographs Gala seeks to explore the complex layers within our selves.  Her work reflects a continuous inward quest to discover our hidden complexities that we naturally conceal and protect. The Artist, who moved to New York from Israel in 1999, incorporates her own journey in her art work: “Coming from a different cultural environment, I had my own layers that were instilled in me: words, memories, events, childhood, places. Then, coming to NY, I started to gain cultural experiences and realizations that build over my preliminary layers.

The artist incorporates words and symbols into her artwork. The bird is used as a symbol for an ideal freedom of thought, dreams and wishes. While we experience physical boundaries as human beings, our thoughts have no limitations, much like birds, which have no borders. They can fly anywhere and everywhere. The tree is a symbol of growth and development. The body is branching out. The texture and the different materials that the artist uses in her artwork create a feeling of multiple dimensions and hidden layers beneath the surface. It makes you want to peel away the layers, to discover what is underneath. The words “Hinenei” and “I AM” reoccur in her paintings. The word “Hinneni” means in Hebrew “I AM” in a very spiritual way. Almost touching your genuine innocent self, the child within you – a concept Gala seeks to explore in her photographic series.

Gala’s moving photographic series presents childhood as our foundation. In these photographs, the artist uncovers the components that define the essence of childhood: curiosity, testing boundaries, naiveté, uncertainty and confusion. These are the uncontaminated layers that need to be re-discovered.
