This month, a new online resource for the people dealing with vermiculite insulation has become available. EMSL Analytical, Inc., one the North America’s largest vermiculite and asbestos testing laboratories, is pleased to announce the launch of VermiculiteTesting.com.

Millions of homes across North America could have vermiculite insulation which may contain asbestos. A mine near Libby, Montana, was the source of over 70 percent of all vermiculite sold in the United States from 1919 to 1990. Unfortunately, the vermiculite from Libby was contaminated with asbestos that was associated with the deposit. Vermiculite from Libby was often sold under the brand name Zonolite.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that people who have vermiculite insulation in their homes treat it as if it were asbestos containing to prevent exposure to any possible asbestos fibers. Many homes with vermiculite insulation have been shown to contain asbestos, but the only way to know for sure is to have the material tested.

Thousands of Americans die each year from asbestos related diseases. Asbestos has been used for years in many building materials and there is no known safe level of asbestos exposure.

“Exposure to asbestos can result in a condition known as asbestosis which is characterized by shortness of breath and cough,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Cancer is also a major concern from asbestos exposure. Inhalation exposure can cause lung cancer and mesothelioma, and possibly gastrointestinal cancers. The EPA has classified asbestos as Group A, a known human carcinogen.  For people concerned about vermiculite in their home, EMSL offers quick and affordable testing services to the public.”

To learn more about testing for asbestos in vermiculite odors or other indoor air quality contaminants, please visit the new website at www.VermiculiteTesting.com or visit www.EMSL.com, call (800) 220-3675 or email info@EMSL.com .
