Work From Home Never Guaranteed

As Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer’s decision to remove working from home has settled, she has provided great warning to workers that flexible work arrangements are never guaranteed and controlled by management as outlined on www.BalancingAustralia.com.au.

The founder of Balancing Australia (www.BalancingAustralia.com.au), Mandy Brasser said that many workers are vulnerable to business decisions that may change their flexible working arrangements.

“With the Yahoo decision, it just highlights how quickly and wide spread everyone’s working conditions may change,” said Ms Brasser.

“This is a rare event, that an organisation would completing withdraw such an arrangement that makes up an important part of their culture,” she said.

With the government plans to double current teleworking arrangements to 12 per cent by 2020, it will make it extremely more difficult to achieve this target if more organisations go in this direction.

“This will be harder to prove for Australian businesses, as these roles were able to be conducted from home previously, so it will be more difficult to prove that they can no longer be done remotely,” she said.

Ms Brasser said that staff must not become complacent if granted flexibility and continue to be productive, actively communicate and collaborate to ensure ongoing working from home success.

Ms Brasser said in order for Australian workers to gain further success and continue proving the benefits of working from home, they need to:

1. Agree on delivery expectations
2. Be productive and consistently deliver within deadlines
3. Set up a dedicated work set up at home
4. Engage regularly with their Manager and teams
5. Be flexible when necessary
