New York discovers high-end tailoring that’s made in Spain

WEBWIRE

On 11 and 12 April, New Yorkers will have the unique opportunity to benefit from a century’s worth of expertise by Spanish tailors Camisería Burgos and López Herbón.

As Honoré de Balzac says in his Treatise on Elegant Living, elegance leaves a poetic impression upon one’s life. Wearing a custom-made shirt and suit is a luxury that transcends both time and trends. The distinguished customers of Camisería Burgos and López Herbón know this well—the two Spanish bespoke tailor shops have achieved perfection in this artisan craft. Their select clientele includes Spain’s Royal Family, celebrities such as Orson Welles and Cary Grant, and style-conscious figures such as the designer Oscar de la Renta and the bullfighter Enrique Ponce.

On 11 and 12 April, from 10am to 2pm, López Herbón and Camisería Burgos will be at the Affinia Manhattan Hotel to offer their exclusive services to gentlemen with exquisite taste, and an appointment. Once measurements are taken, the garments will be hand-sewed in their workshops in Spain and then sent directly to clients’ homes.

Camisería Burgos has been synonymous with tradition and quality since 1912. Authentic artisans in luxury, they take ten measurements to create an individualised pattern and offer a range of textiles, including poplin, voile, fil-à-fil, linen... They have as many types of collars as customers; sleeves, linings and side seams are hand-sewed, and monograms and eyelet buttonholes are embroidered by hand.

In 1918, López Herbón and Cía set up shop on Cedaceros Street, in the heart of Madrid. They begin by cutting a personalised pattern. Then the client chooses from a selection of natural and organic fabrics: alpaca, tweed, cashmere, wool... Seams, linings and finishings are sewn with extra-special attention to detail.
