• Unique model for designing and facilitating age-based working solutions wins in the category of innovative HR concepts
• Angela Titzrath, Board Member for Personnel: “Sustainable solutions are only possible together”

Deutsche Post DHL has just been awarded the German Industry Innovation Award (“Innovationspreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft”) in the category of “innovative HR concepts” for its Generations Pact. The award pays tribute to the most significant scientific, technical, business and intellectual innovations and was presented for the 32nd time during a festive event. This year, nearly 300 companies competed in four categories for the coveted prize, which is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

“The challenges of demographic change are a phenomenon all of society is facing,” said Angela Titzrath, Board Member for Personnel at Deutsche Post DHL. “Sustainable solutions can only be developed together. That is why we, together with the trade unions, have created an instrument of exemplary character that is based on the solidarity of long-term employees and young professionals.”

In October of 2011, Deutsche Post AG and the German trade union ver.di agreed upon a trend-setting model for designing and facilitating age-based working solutions. The agreement makes it possible for older employees to actively participate in professional life until they reach the age of legal retirement. In this way Deutsche Post AG not only continues to benefit from the valuable knowledge and experience of older employees, but it also helps them enter retirement healthy and sound.

Attractive models for older employees

Specifically, through the Generations Pact, the “working-time accounts” and a demography fund serve as a supplement to the partial retirement program. Working-time accounts give employees the opportunity to save up a credit balance during the active working phase and redeem it before they enter retirement. Contributions from the demography fund are used by the company to increase payments to employees during partial retirement. Money for the fund is supplied by an allowance from the 2012 wage rounds.

In this way, the Bonn-based company Deutsche Post DHL offers attractive models - including financial ones - for older employees that allow them to continue working at reduced hours until the age of retirement. At the same time, the Generations Pact improves employment opportunities for young people: Last year, some 1,300 trainees received job offers at the company, approximately 25 percent more than the prior year. In the summer of 2013, all suitable trainees will once again be offered permanent employment status at the company.

“We are a traditional ’people business’,” said Angela Titzrath. “The talents, knowledge and abilities of our employees critically shape our long-term success. Today’s award is both recognition and incentive at the same time. It will encourage and strengthen us in our efforts to address such existentially important issues.”
