For years, many people living near the Moffett Federal Airfield by Mountain View, California, have had concerns over toxic chemicals known to be in the soil and groundwater in the area. After a recent report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), some residents now admit to being scared.

The EPA has found higher than expected levels of trichloroethylene, also known as TCE, in the air and groundwater. TCE is not the only toxic chemical present, both PCE and vinyl chloride have also been found in the area.

Of particular concern to many area residents is the news that the EPA has discovered high levels of TCE in the air in some homes and over 20 commercial buildings. TCE can enter buildings over the toxic plume through a process known as vapor intrusion.

Trichloroethylene can cause a number of health issues for building occupants exposed to it in the air they breathe. Acute and chronic inhalation exposure to trichloroethylene can affect the human central nervous system, with symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, confusion, euphoria, facial numbness, and weakness. Liver, kidney, immunological, endocrine, and developmental effects have also been reported in humans.

One company that has been on the forefront of helping to test for contaminated soils, water and vapor intrusion issues in buildings across California is LA Testing. “Exposure to TCE can lead to so many health concerns,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “LA Testing offers testing supplies and analysis to help determine if TCE and other chemicals are present in air, water and soil.”

LA Testing has sponsored an online educational video about the dangers associated with vapor intrusion.  It can be seen at:
