Kodak Purchases Innovative Caries Detection Software

WEBWIRE

ROCHESTER, N.Y., July 20 -- Eastman Kodak Company announced that it has purchased Logicon Caries DetectorTM Software, a unique tool that assists dentists in the difficult task of diagnosing radiographs for proximal caries.

The software, previously owned and marketed by Northrop Grumman Corporation, and GA Industries, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., extracts image features and correlates them with a database of known caries problems. In doing so, the software automatically highlights possible abnormalities on patients’ digital dental radiographs, signaling the dentist to take a close look at the tooth involved.

Kodak has acquired all the assets associated with the Logicon Caries Detector Software, along with a license for certain uses of the Logicon trademark.

For the past three years, Logicon Caries Detector Software has been combined with the KODAK RVG 6000 Digital Radiography System, Kodak’s premier intraoral digital imaging solution.

“Now, with our purchase, Kodak will have total control of the software, giving us more flexibility as we move forward,” said Karen Ruckman, Director of Global Marketing for Kodak’s dental systems group.

“A huge demand exists in the dental community for professionals to have the most efficient and effective tools to confidently diagnose their patients and provide treatment options,” she added. “Logicon Caries Detector Software combined with Kodak image science is the first of many planned product introductions that provide intelligent imaging solutions to help in this regard.”

Clinical studies show that caries detector software enabled dentists to find 20% more cases of caries penetrating into the dentin of the tooth than they were able to find without it.

David Gakenheimer, Ph.D., President of GA Industries and principal developer of Logicon Caries Detector Software, has joined Kodak and will continue in his development role.

“Working with an organization such as Kodak will bring unprecedented marketing and distribution resources for the Logicon Caries Detector Software,” said Gakenheimer. “With Kodak’s support, we can easily drive further adoption of this critical diagnostic tool into more dental practices, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of patient care—something dental professionals strive for on a daily basis.”
