Owners of Hurricane Sandy Damaged Homes Utilize Home Test Kits to Check for Mold

IAQ Index™ provides test kits to help identify mold and other indoor contaminants that may cause allergies, disease and trigger asthma attacks.

Three months ago Hurricane Sandy left a path of destruction along the coasts of New Jersey and New York.  Many homes and businesses damaged by the storm have since been rebuilt, while thousands more have largely remained untouched.

Many of these untouched properties suffered extensive water damage and have since become infested with mold.  Even a number of the damaged properties that have been rebuilt today have issues due to mold contamination.

“Mold is being found in many of the buildings that were hastily rebuilt,” reported Bruce Jacobs, CIH, President of IAQ Index.  “As people rebuilt, some do-it-yourselfers did not properly remove or dry wet building materials in attics, wall cavities and other parts of the buildings.  Even people who hired contractors to rebuild their homes and businesses are now finding that in the post hurricane rush and chaos many properties were not properly remediated.  Unfortunately, some people living and working in these buildings are now being exposed to high concentrations of mold.”

Even the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned residents of issues related to mold following the Hurricane Sandy.  The EPA’s Hurricane Sandy website states, “Mold can cause serious health problems. The key to mold control is moisture control. After the flood, remove standing water and dry indoor areas. Remove and discard anything that has been wet for more than 24-48 hours.”

To help people determine if mold is a problem in their indoor environment, IAQ Index has developed an easy to use test kit for mold and other indoor contaminants.  The kit provides a cost effective method and easy to understand results to determine if mold is a problem.

About IAQ Index
IAQ Index was developed by a Certified Industrial Hygienist with decades of experience dealing with indoor air quality issues.  IAQ Index was developed as a health-based, easy-to-understand, air quality index that is calculated from data generated for various parameters commonly measured during IAQ surveys.  The approach is similar to the EPA’s Air Quality Index that has been used historically to communicate the risks posed by common pollutants in the ambient air.
