According to the Associated Press, a warning has been issued by the government to consumers suggesting an inspection of Fisher-Price Newborn Rock ‘N Play Sleepers due to the risk of mold exposure.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported that mold growth can occur between the product’s removable seat cushion and hard plastic frame if the sleeper becomes wet or moist or is infrequently cleaned. Infants that have used this product are at risk of mold exposure.

The CPSC and Fisher Price have announced a voluntary recall of the affected product. This recall applies to 800,000 infant sleepers that have been sold nationwide, in stores and online, since September 2009 for between $50 and $85.

Even if mold is not present at the time of purchase, growth can occur after the product is used.

Mold exposure may result in allergic reactions, during which fever, asthma, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, or lungs may occur. Also, those with health problems or a weak immune system may develop respiratory or other infections.

“Mold can often be detected by sight or smell, but it is not always visible to the naked eye and should be confirmed by testing,” states Jason Dobranic Ph. D., EMSL’s Vice President of Microbiology & Life Sciences. “EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest mold testing labs, operates numerous accredited laboratories across the United States that provide advanced testing services to detect mold in air and surface samples.”
