On December 15th, local miners in the Block D Tanzanite mining area struck a rich reef of very deeply color saturated crystals. Whilst the quantity discovered was not very high, the quality of the crystals was exceptional. A local gemstone cutting company Lapigems Gem Company negotiated to purchase much of this rough material. Marketing Director Nicola Thomas explains that the company works closely with local artisanal miners to source the very finest 1% of Tanzanite mined.

The Tanzanian government has divided the Tanzanite mining area into 4 distinct blocks. Block C is mined by a multinational called Tanzanite One, whilst the other 3 blocks. A,B,D are mined by local miners. Lapigems Gem Company will now cut the crystals into fine cuts of various shapes dictated by the actual shape of the rough pieces. These will then be available in their renowned collection. The Lapigems Tanzanite collection is well known for the extreme selectiveness of the Tanzanites included. Only the very finest grades are selected for inclusion.

Ms. Thomas explains that this means that field agents are constantly talking to miners and visiting mines to see their recent production. This latest find is an exciting development as pockets of fine crystals such as the quality of the ones found in the recent strike are rare.
