Mercedes-AMG invests in plant expansion

The logistics center and the employees’ parking garage will begin operations in the autumn of 2013. The new buildings will be erected on an area of about 6,400 square meters adjacent to the main plant.

With the construction of the new logistics center here in Affalterbach we are consistently following up on our growth strategy, ’Performance 50’. We have decided to expand our program from the current 22 to about 30 models, and want to grow our sales in the next five years from the current level of about 20,000 to about 30,000 vehicles“, said Ola Källenius.
“In doing so, we are setting our sights not only on growth but also on the sustainability of our location.“ The logistics center, whose construction is oriented to the sustainability requirements of the EU ”Green Building“ program, and the employees’ parking garage will begin operations in the autumn of 2013. The new buildings will be erected on an area of about 6,400 square meters adjacent to the main plant.

Centralization of capacities in the new logistics center
In future, the new logistics center is to bundle the capacities of Mercedes-AMG at the Affalterbach location. This centralization of all logistics services will facilitate analysis of the growing logistics requirements and a reduction in the number of transport runs, thus providing further relief for roads in the region. In addition, we plan to bring a tugger train inside the plant, which is to replace the lift trucks at the location in the future. By equipping the logistics hall with a state-of-the-art shelving system, we can also achieve the shortest access times for materials in the future.

Adjacent to the logistics hall, a parking garage with eight partial levels will offer 425 parking spaces for employees. In addition, the floor space under the parking garage will be used as a tire warehouse. This will ensure optimal use of the available land area and a reduction in the use of floor space.

Orientation to EU "Green Building“ program
One of the most important aspects of the project construction concept is protection of the environment: Mercedes-AMG has set itself the goal to achieve a 25% reduction below the Energy Saving Ordinance limit, which will enable certification according to the "Green Building“ Program of the EU. The performance brand is thus sending a signal for the sustained growth of the company.

The highly efficient technology and intelligent building design contribute to the realization of this claim. Thus, for example, a highly effective, gas-driven fuel cell will take care of the heating, cooling and electricity production in the new building. Moreover, the installation also facilitates preventive fire protection by preventing fires in the tire warehouse through the use of the oxygen-poor air created in the process.

Further energy-saving and resource-enhancing measures - such as the extensive roof landscaping aimed at creating rainwater evaporation surfaces and the use of rainwater - facilitate the further implementation of the "Green Building“ concept. The new logistics center will make a significant contribution to environmental protection and the further development of environmental management at the location.
