Quality of Care for Quality of Life: Celebrating National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

SAN DIEGO - San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine will host free community events such as a healthcare planning workshop, tours, art exhibit and more in honor of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month in November.

Hospice is the model for quality, compassionate care for people facing a serious or life-threatening illness. This care involves a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the needs and wishes of patients and their families.

Throughout the month of November, hospice providers across the country are raising awareness about hospice care as an important healthcare resource.

Locally, San Diego Hospice is pleased to present the following free events that are open to the general public in honor of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month:

  • Gallery 4311 Art & Authors Exhibition; Sunday, Nov. 4 – 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Held at San Diego Hospice’s Inpatient Care Center (4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103), this hosted wine and cheese reception features live piano music, new artwork, and features authors Stacey Canfield and Candace Conradi.
  • San Diego Veteran’s Day Parade; Monday, Nov. 12 – 11:00 a.m.: As a way to thank veterans and their families for their sacrifice and service, San Diego Hospice is participating in the San Diego Veteran’s Day Parade in Downtown San Diego. “Breaking the Sound Barrier” is the theme of this year’s 65th anniversary parade.
  • Facebook Chat; Friday, Nov. 16 – 11:00 a.m. to noon: Participate in the San Diego Hospice Q&A chat with Scott Irwin, MD, PhD – Chief of Psychiatry and Psychosocial Services for San Diego Hospice. You don’t have to have a Facebook account to view the discussion, but to submit a question you do need a Facebook account and you will need to “like” San Diego Hospice’s Facebook page.
  • Roadmap to Healthcare Decision Making; Saturday, Nov. 17 – 9:00 a.m. to noon: Family members, caregivers and anyone in the community impacted by chronic or serious illness is invited to attend and learn how to ensure that your legal wishes are met, especially when you are unable to advocate for yourself. Local medical and legal experts will present valuable information to help you make informed decisions about your healthcare goals.   • California’s Only Specially-Licensed Hospice-Hospital Tours: Explore San Diego Hospice’s beautiful Inpatient Care Center, located in Hillcrest at 4311 Third Avenue. Make sure you take this opportunity to learn more about hospice services and ask questions regarding end-of-life care. No reservations necessary.
